America's second independence day, known as Juneteenth is the oldest holiday commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. African Americans celebrate the day Union Troops arrived in Galvenston Texas announcing that President Lincoln had empanicpated them two whole years before the troops arrived with the news. 158 years later, African Americans continue to celebrate the day their ancestors were liberated. Eudora Poe and LaShawn Cunningham, both descendants of ensalved ancestors, have hosted numerous Juneteenth events. Their love and passion for the holiday has driven them to educate those whil still may be unaware of America's second independence day. The two women have joined forces to start Norwich's very first Miss Juneteenth pageant. The scholarship and gala will focus on cultural awareness, community service projects and education. Qualifications are: 1. Must be a CT resident. 2. Of African/African American or West Indian Descent 3. Be in grades 3-5, 6-8, 9-12 4.
