(Norwich, CT) – NHS Second Saturday Tour: Rebels & Revolutionaries Saturday, July 8, 2023, 9am – 10am. Please join us for a walking tour around Historic Norwichtown while we tell stories of some of Norwichtown’s remarkable rebels and revolutionaries. On this tour, you’ll learn about incredible individuals such as Sarah Knight, who defied traditional gender roles and was a colonial era tavern keeper and Jean Pierre Boyer, who briefly lived in Norwichtown, then went on to become the first President of Haiti. You’ll hear about a different kind of rebel such as brothers, Alexander, and James Robertson, who were the proprietors and printers of Norwich’s first newspaper, The Norwich Packet, until their loyalist leanings forced them to leave town. Come experience Historic Norwichtown’s revolutionary history! After the tour, please stick around for the Samuel Huntington Wreath Laying Ceremony in the Burying Ground at 10:30am. There is parking available around the Norwichtown Green. Please meet on the Norwichtown Green on the corner of Elm Ave and Town Street. The tour will be roughly one hour and is less than a mile. The Burying Ground has hilly and uneven terrain, which may not be suitable for wheelchairs. Restrooms are available in the Norwich Heritage and Regional Visitors Center which is open Friday – Sunday 11:00am-3:00pm. The rain date will be July 15th Samuel Huntington, a self-taught lawyer, was born in Scotland, CT on July 16, 1731. His illustrious career included: serving in the Second Continental Congress; being a signatory of the Declaration of Independence; and President of the Continental Congress in 1781, when the Articles of Confederation went into effect – thus making him the First President of the United States, in Congress Assembled. He later served as a 10-term governor of the State of Connecticut. His mansion on East Town Street now houses the administrative headquarters of United Community and Family Services of Norwich. Parking for this FREE event will be at 34 East Town Street or 41-47 Town Street. Bottled water will be provided. Please bring a lawn chair.
