Norwich Youth, Family, and Recreation is excited to announce the long-awaited return of the Armstrong Tennis Courts! The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony will take place on June 29, 2023 at 2pm at the courts, which are located at 76 Mohegan Road. The Armstrong Tennis Courts date back to the 1940s and were both created and maintained by Steve Armstrong until he passed away in 1989. They were originally made of clay but due to costly maintenance and the fragility of the clay surface, the courts closed in 2019. During the next 4 years, the local tennis committee along with the former Recreation Director continued to lobby for the funding and construction of new tennis courts. Due to the committee’s valiant effort, generous donors, and former Human Services’ Director Lee-Ann Gomes earmarking of ARPA funding for the tennis courts, the project was complete in June 2023. Fred Phelps, Tennis Committee Chairperson said, "Our committee believes the courts will allow for a resurgence of interest and participation in tennis which will provide fitness and social interaction within the community." The courts will be open to the public after the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. However, the public should take note that there will be specialty camps held on the courts for registered participants, Monday through Friday from 9am-12pm beginning 6/26 and ending on 7/21. When camps are not in session, we encourage everyone to pick up a ball and racket and enjoy on the courts! The Youth, Family, and Recreation Division will have rackets and balls available for use for those who do not have the means to purchase their own, from 9-4pm on weekdays. If interested, folks can inquire by contacting the Administrative Specialist, Idis Andino @ 860-823-3791, or emailing recreation@cityofnorwich.org.
