On Wednesday, December 7th at 11:55 A.M., members of the Norwich Area Veterans Council will assemble at the Freedom Plaza at Norwich City Hall for their annual commemoration of Pearl Harbor Day. The remembrance will be held, rain or shine, and it is open to the public. Two Norwich residents were killed in action aboard the USS Arizona: SK3 Harry Carlson & Seaman 1st Class Michael Quarto; and members of their respective families will be in attendance. U.S. Navy veteran and Norwich Area Veterans Council past-President John Waggoner will serve as the master of ceremonies, recounting the events of the surprise attacks of December 7, 1941. Norwich Mayor Peter Nystrom will greet the attendees and Navy personnel from the sub-base in Groton. The invocation and benediction will be given by members of the NAVC, and USMC veteran and NAVC member Tom Callinan will perform The National Anthem and "Remember Pearl Harbor", a song composed by Don Reid and Sammy Kaye – 10 days after war broke out in 1941.
