(Norwich, CT) - The Norwich Historical Society is hosting a Second Saturday Walking Tour - Behind the Scenes: The Calkins House on Saturday, August 13, 2022, at 10:00am. Please join the Norwich Historical Society and the Calkins Family Association for an exclusive behind the scenes look at the restoration work of the circa 1659 Calkins House which was saved from demolition in 2020. Melissa Calkins, President of the CFA, will explain the history of the house, provide an update regarding the restoration of the house, and share plans for the future. This tour is sponsored by the Norwich Historical Society and is part of our Second Saturday Tour line-up. Please note this tour is limited to 30 people and you must register in advance. Suggested donation of $10. All proceeds benefit the CFA and NHS. Parking will be at 228 West Town Street. ABOUT THE NORWICH HISTORICAL SOCIETY Formed in 2001, the Norwich Historical Society seeks to preserve, protect, and promote the rich history of Norwich, CT. We are a registered 501(c)(3), non-profit organization run by a part time Executive Director and a volunteer board of directors. Over the past five years, the Norwich Historical Society launched several initiatives designed to strengthen Norwich’s heritage tourism efforts such as opening the Norwich Heritage & Regional Visitors' Center and creating the Walk Norwich Trail system which is a series of historically themed self-guided walking tours. ABOUT THE CALKINS FAMILY ASSOCIATION The Calkins Family Association is a public history 501(c)(3), non-profit organization. Our mission is to promote, collect and preserve genealogical and historical research relating to persons and families bearing the name Calkins or one of its variations and to descendants of such families. The historical home of our ancestor Hugh Calkins II, located at 232 West Town Street, Norwich, Connecticut, was slated for demolition. The Calkins Family Association (CFA) Board of Directors held an emergency discussion and overwhelmingly agreed to purchase his home and rescue it from the wrecking ball.
