Pizza with The Police; To Protect and Serve New London, CT (June 1, 2021) – On Friday, June 4, 2021 from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm (rain or shine) at Sound Community Services 21 Montauk Avenue location in New London, The AXS Center will be hosting “Pizza with The Police.” On this day, the New London County community is invited and will have the opportunity to meet and greet some of our bravest, local law enforcement officers. AXS Center staff and our officers will be serving free pizza to the community, making conversation, and showing solidarity. The AXS Center, a part of Sound Community Services Young Adult Services (YAS) located in New London, is a community program that is tailored to assist young adults with emotional, mental health, substance abuse issues/concerns, etc. Our young adults are between the ages of 18-25 years old and their philosophy is centered around building positive relationships through education, recreation, and community partnerships to enhance the quality of life of Southeastern Connecticut’s young adult population. One of those issues is the relationship between law enforcement and the community. Over the last several years, law enforcement has taken a beating in the media and what rarely gets portrayed are the wonderful officers who serve their communities and are extremely passionate about what they do! Reform is needed in every sector with the likes of accurate representation, understanding mental health needs, etc. Reform is occurring in which an objective crowd understands; however, the masses are only in tune with the social perception which can be skewed through media. The AXS Center, in collaboration with owner of ReelE Media, singer, songwriter, artist, and executive producer Frank Colmenares, known as Frank Grams, on a documentary titled “To Protect and Serve.” This project will consist of interviewing several law enforcement officials, young adults, community members, and AXS Center staff around their perception of community policing and how to bridge the relationship. Ultimately, the AXS Center’s mission is to provide a long term, life changing environment as to why they chose to bring light to this topic. Errol Maurice, Senior Director of Residential and Community Programs at Sound Community Services, quotes Margaret J. Wheatley, “There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about.” Maurice also states, “Our Core Values at Sound Community Services are Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Excellence. I am grateful for all our community partners who share these same values and are vested in being agents of social change. Ignoring societal woes only perpetuate an outcome to the likes of a broken record.” Let's continue to build our communities and serve the people of New London County!
