April 14, 2021 For immediate release: Norwich, CT: Norwich Arts Center announces the winners of their annual Volunteer of the Year Awards. April is National Volunteer Month and because Norwich Arts Center is an all-volunteer organization, this is the best month to honor those who went above and beyond during the past year. The 2021 honorees are Laura Kenyon, Carol Dunn and Susan Scott Kenney. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the Center’s Donald L. Oat Theater has been closed and the Art Galleries have had very limited hours. These volunteers demonstrated qualities that made a difference to the organization and the arts community. Laura Kenyon, of New London, was the Director of 3 virtual cabaret shows that were live streamed from Norwich Arts Center’s website as a fundraiser. The shows included “Virtual Villains’ Cabaret”, “Virtual Holly Jolly Cabaret” and “Let the Sunshine In”. She is a Choreographer who saw the opportunity to Direct and Produce during a time of need. Laura assembled talented cast members from the region and as she stated, “gave them a platform and chance to perform throughout the pandemic”. Kris Nickerson, President of NAC’s Board of Director’s added, “Laura’s drive and creativity has made an impact on many local talented singers and dancers. Her cabarets allow them to shine.” Carol Dunn, of Hanover, is an artist and Norwich Arts Center Board member. She has been critical to the Galleries’ success during the pandemic by arranging for safe pick up of artwork, maintaining the bookkeeping and providing images of the works for our website during a time when many could only view a show from their computers. Carol said, “I volunteer at NAC because I enjoy being part of a creative group of artists. NAC is where my art career really took off, and the confidence I gained there led to me becoming involved with several other art organizations. I also enjoy helping emerging artists gain that same confidence.” Kris Nickerson added, “Carol stepped up during a very difficult time for our organization. Our Galleries were our lifeline - especially with the limited hours that we were open to the public. She was the glue that kept it going.” Carol added, “I was really thrilled to receive this Volunteer of the Year Award!” Susan Scott Kenney, of Dayville, is a Board member of Norwich Arts Center and has held the position as the President of NAC’s Galleries for 6 years. She said “Upon retiring from teaching I wished to further develop my skills as an artist and a teacher. Norwich Arts Center provided me with that opportunity. The arts continue to be underfunded and volunteering has given me an opportunity to connect with other artists and to support emerging artists. Volunteering provides a chance to support the community and to interact with both visual and performing artists. In giving, we receive - and my experience with NAC has allowed me to do both.” Kris Nickerson added, “Sue has been instrumental this year in encouraging collaboration between the artists in the Galleries and the performing artists in the Theater. Her efforts make our organization stronger.” Each winner was presented with their award in small, private ceremonies. Norwich Arts Center was formed in 1987 to cultivate the region's appreciation, understanding, and enjoyment of the arts by providing affordable cultural enrichment through diverse visual, literary & performing arts programs and events. Norwich Arts Center has opportunities available for those in the community looking for a way to give back and who want a rewarding experience.
