Before COVID-19, Sound Community Services gathered 150 – 200 people together consisting of their clients, their families, and staff to Mitchell College in New London for a Thanksgiving feast. Food was catered by Mitchell College, the food was served by staff, music would play, and prizes would be handed out. It was a moment in time that staff and clients looked forward to each year and were thankful for. With the state restrictions and CDC guidelines, Sound Community Services is unable to host an in-person event this year. Phil Steffens, Sound Community Services Program Coordinator for Sounds Oasis Program, who organized the Thanksgiving Feast each year, wanted to still do something for their clients even during a pandemic. Spearheaded by Steffens and with the help of staff, they will be keeping the Thanksgiving spirit going by bringing Thanksgiving into the homes of their clients. Steffens says, “We will be catering individual meals from Ivy’s Simply Homemade and delivering them directly to clients in the community on the 23rd and 24th of November. Dividing deliveries in two days enables us time to get to those persons in need. We will be sending a greeting card with the meal as well.” Thanksgiving brings friends and families together. Unfortunately, this year, Thanksgiving will be different for so many. But during these uncertain times, we are sure the clients of Sound Community Services will be filled with gratitude as they sit down to enjoy their Thanksgiving meal.
