About Us
Casella Waste Systems, Inc. and its predecessor companies were founded in 1975 as Casella's Refuse Removal in Rutland, Vermont. On a chilly day in early April, Doug Casella began picking up garbage from a few customers in the Rutland and Killington region with a pickup truck he had bought with money saved from jobs he’d had as a kid in high school. Because the service was good, the small enterprise grew, and John Casella joined his younger brother a year later to help run the business.
The brothers, influenced not only by that unique spirit of New England frugality, could also see the future – and in 1977 built the company's first, and the state's first, recycling facility in Vermont. It was an inspired vision, one that anticipated the opportunities around resource renewal as well as viewing waste management as an integrated set of services – collection, recycling, transfer, and disposal.
Today, with a clear strategy to serve our customers with integrated services, we continue to lead the solid waste industry with an innovative business strategy that seeks to create sustainable value beyond the traditional waste disposal model. We view waste as a resource for producing renewable energy and as a raw material for manufacturing new products.
Services
~
Recycling
: Casella provides service to over 150,000 customers of all types. Through our core operations in six states (Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont and Pennsylvania) we provide a vast array of waste and recycling services to customers in over 40 states. Utilizing our asset base while partnering with our customers around Resource Solutions is the number one way we help to protect the environment, support our communities and serve our customers.
~
Collection
: Sustainable resource management would not be possible without safe and reliable collection service. We operate a network of over 700 collection vehicles that extend from western New York through northern Maine. Offering Residential and Business Services, and Dumpster Rental
~
Organics
: Within the municipal solid waste (MSW) stream, organics include food scraps, yard debris, and soiled paper. Beyond the MSW stream, the category includes things like wastewater treatment biosolids, food manufacturing by-products, animal manures, paper mill residues, wood ash, and other mineral residuals. We work to recycle these materials and return their value to the soil through composting, anaerobic digestion, land application, and other methods.
~Energy
:
An innovative approach to managing today’s waste includes the realization that extending the life of the products we consume is a critical step in reducing waste. The concept of managing solid waste means giving our trash new purpose and a new life. It’s about turning waste into a resource.
~
Special Wastes
: We operate fully permitted Subtitle D (non-hazardous) landfills that accept MSW, construction and demolition (C&D) debris, and non-hazardous special wastes. Our experienced sales staff and regulatory advisors can guide you through the process of determining acceptability and answer any questions about testing and the approval process.
