Event Description:
Take in a variety of performances -- from Dixieland jazz to spoken word -- and enjoy an inspiring walk that will take you to some of New London's community and historic landmarks on Sunday, April 22.
Stand in solidarity with those who have so little. Together we can make a difference! Register and get more info at www.nlhhc.org/walk.
The festivities start at noon on Golden Street; the Walk leaves at 1. It is organized by the Homeless Hospitality Center and Connecticut College. Mohegan Sun is the lead sponsor.
On Golden Street, swing to the Dixieland tunes of the East Coast Ramblers, browse a nonprofit fair and view a “Faces of Homelessness” photo exhibit. Meet up with friends and grab a snack or lunch. Our thrift store at 35 Golden St. (Homeward Bound Treasures) and other businesses will also be open with special discounts.
The Walk will be kicked off by Mohegan Tribal Chair Kevin Brown, New London Mayor Michael Passero and Connecticut College President Katherine Bergeron.
The 1.8-mile route will take you past some of New London's historic, cultural and community landmarks:
-- St. Francis House (the center of a local social justice movement that led to the founding of HHC in 2006)
-- the Williams Memorial Park Historic District
-- HHC's Vet House on Mountain Avenue
-- the former St. Mary's School, being converted to affordable apartments
-- The Hempsted Houses
-- the Shaw Mansion (New London, Connecticut)
-- the Custom House Maritime Museum (open for free to registered walkers)
-- the Sailors & Soldiers Monument
You'll hear the stories of people who've been homeless, experience the beat of the percussion duo Mixed Blessings, listen to the pointed songs of the Raging Grannies and hear the poetry of spoken word artists.
The Walk ends at the Parade Plaza with a sweet treat and music provided by JPO Productions LLC. You'll can also express your thoughts there about homelessness, the Walk and other issues that affect our local community.
